Château la Tour Vaucros sits in Sorgues, about ten minutes from Avignon, where the pine woods start giving way to vineyards. It's a place I enjoy photographing: large enough to breathe in, compact enough that a wedding day keeps its rhythm without anyone getting lost.
The first thing you see is the driveway. Umbrella pines, a couple of cypresses, oleander spilling over the gravel, and a string of bulbs run from one tree to the next. You pass under an ornate wrought-iron gate, and the property opens up all at once: the stone bastide, its square tower, the clipped box hedges, the pool just below. From the air, the estate sits in a clearing ringed by forest, with rows of vines climbing the surrounding hills.
The light, from morning to the evening string lights
In the Vaucluse, summer runs hot and midday light shows no mercy. That's a constraint, but a familiar one: here the tall pines break the shade into soft patches, and often it's enough to shift the portraits from one alley to the next to find light that holds.
The estate is at its best late in the day. When the sun drops behind the hills, the stone of the bastide turns honey-coloured, the vines warm up, and those strings of bulbs start to matter in the frame. That's the moment I keep, whenever I can, for the couple session: fifteen minutes just the two of you, away from the guests, while the aperitif is in full swing.
The spots that make a day
There's more than one place to hold a ceremony. Under the clipped trees, by the wrought-iron pavilion, you're in cool shade. An alley of oleander makes a tighter backdrop for intimate weddings. And if you want the vines behind you, they're never far.
The gravel courtyard, in front of the stone façade, often becomes the gathering point: it's where people toast, where they wait, where a vintage convertible Mercedes sometimes ends up parked. The pool and its loungers stretch the evening out for anyone who wants a breather. For dinner, the room plays it plain: cane-backed wooden chairs, pale linens, a few wildflowers in violet and white. Nothing loud, which suits me fine, it leaves all the room to the people.
My approach, at Château la Tour Vaucros as anywhere
I shoot in natural light, no flash aimed at faces and no long posing sessions. My work rests mostly on watching: following the thread of the day, catching the real moments, and only framing portraits for as long as it takes for you to stay yourselves.
A scouting visit beforehand, or at least a look around in the morning, lets me know where the sun will be at each hour and anticipate the tense stretches, like the getting-ready or the walk down the aisle. On an estate I know, that work shows in the images: less hesitation, more accuracy.
