Castel Bay is one of the most singular reception venues in the Var region. Located in Hyères, facing the Golden Islands, this venue combines contemporary architecture with unobstructed views of the Mediterranean. It is a setting for weddings that seek the sea's light, the deep blue of the Mediterranean and a resolutely contemporary elegance, far from the stone bastides of inland Provence.
I have been photographing in the Var for several seasons, and Castel Bay fascinates me for the quality of its maritime light and the richness of its framing possibilities.
The setting at Castel Bay
Castel Bay's architecture is designed for light and view: large glass panels, open terraces facing the Mediterranean, fluid spaces between interior and exterior. As a permanent backdrop, the silhouettes of the Golden Islands, Porquerolles, Port-Cros, Île du Levant, floating above the turquoise water.
The maritime light here is of rare quality: more diffuse than inland Provence, warmer in the evening, with those reflections playing on the sea and dressing portraits in incomparable natural light.
My approach at Castel Bay
Photographing a wedding at Castel Bay means working with the sea as a central element of the reportage. My Fine Art approach adapts to this maritime environment: more open compositions to integrate the horizons, particular attention to the light reflected by the water, couple portraits at sunset facing the islands.
No flash, no artifice, the end-of-day light over the Mediterranean is the finest lighting a photographer could hope for.
