A Fine Art reportage in Château de l'Escarelle

Château de l'Escarelle sits in La Celle, at the foot of the Sainte-Baume, in the part of the Var that still stays off the coastal circuit. It is a working wine estate, but what sets it apart is mostly what surrounds it: several hundred hectares of forest classified as a nature reserve, closing off the landscape and isolating the place completely.

Mathieu Pasques photographed Justine and Marin's wedding here. What stands out on site is the contrast between the estate's two registers: the open rows of vines, flooded with light during the day, and the woodland right beside them, dark and cool. Two opposite photographic moods a few minutes' walk apart.

The setting at Château de l'Escarelle

The main building, in pale stone, is arranged around a courtyard that holds its coolness for much of the day. The cellars offer vaulted volumes that come in useful when the outdoor light turns too harsh, or if it rains. Around it, the vine parcels slope gently away, with the massif in the background of nearly every frame.

That ridge line is what changes everything compared with an estate on flat ground. It gives structure behind group shots and portraits, where many wine estates offer only a flat horizon.

His approach at Château de l'Escarelle

Because the estate is backed against the relief, the sun drops behind the Sainte-Baume earlier than elsewhere in the Var. In practice, golden hour arrives about twenty minutes ahead of what you would get in Hyères or Saint-Tropez on the same date. That is the kind of detail worth planning for: he starts the couple session in the vines while the light is still raking, then moves to the wooded avenues once it falls.

The rest doesn't change: natural light, no flash, portraits built without stiffness, and the thread of the day caught without stepping in.

Summer at l'Escarelle

This is probably the season where the estate holds up best, unlike many Var venues. In August, at two in the afternoon, the light is harsh and frontal on the vines. But the adjoining forest and the planted avenues provide genuinely usable shade, which makes it possible to photograph the cocktail hour and family groups without burnt-out faces or squinting eyes.

Autumn, after the harvest, opens another palette: vine leaves turning red and ochre, lower and warmer light, and a noticeably quieter estate.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Where is Château de l'Escarelle?+

Château de l'Escarelle is in La Celle, in the Var, at the foot of the Sainte-Baume massif. The estate is about 45 minutes from Aix-en-Provence, 40 minutes from Toulon and an hour from the Var coastline.

What sets l'Escarelle apart from other Var wine estates?+

The estate is not only about its vines: it is surrounded by several hundred hectares of forest classified as a nature reserve. That closeness between rows of vines and woodland gives two very different lighting moods a few minutes' walk apart, which is rare for a single venue.

How does Mathieu work with the light at l'Escarelle?+

L'Escarelle sits in a slight hollow, backed against the massif. The sun disappears behind the ridge earlier than on the plain, which brings golden hour forward by around twenty minutes compared with the coast. He plans the couple session accordingly: in the vines while the light is still raking, then under the trees once it drops.

Does the estate work for summer weddings?+

Yes, and it is one of its strengths. Where many Var estates offer no shade during the day, the adjoining forest and the planted avenues make it possible to photograph the cocktail hour and group shots without blown-out faces in the full August sun.

What is the pricing for a wedding at Château de l'Escarelle?+

Collections start from €2,300 for a full day. Travel within the Var is included in the Signature and Prestige collections.
