A Fine Art reportage in Hyères
Hyères is the oldest resort on the French Riviera, the town they call Hyères-les-Palmiers for its palms. A medieval hilltop old town, estates that look out to sea, and offshore the Golden Islands, Porquerolles and Port-Cros. The light here isn't the light of inland Provence. It's wider, softened by the Mediterranean throwing the sky back up.
I photograph weddings regularly along the Var coast, around Hyères and the Giens peninsula. What changes here is the relationship to the horizon: a blue line in the background from morning to evening, setting depth behind every portrait.
My Fine Art approach in Hyères
The sea is part of the scene, but I'm a little wary of it. Placed wrong, it flattens the image and tips it into postcard territory. I'd rather keep it as a breath, a gap between two planes, a colour that comes back from one frame to the next.
The rest of how I work doesn't change, whether in Aix, the Luberon or facing the islands: natural light, portraits built without stiffness, the thread of the day caught without stepping in. The difference is the evening. When the wind drops and the sun slips behind Giens, the Var light turns genuinely beautiful. That's the moment I keep for the couple session.
The most beautiful wedding venues in Hyères and the Var
Castel Bay sits above the bay, contemporary architecture and a clear view of the islands. Château de Vaucouleurs, more classic, stands in parkland with the sea behind it. For a wedding à deux, Porquerolles and Port-Cros open up unspoiled settings, reached by boat from the peninsula. And as soon as you head inland, the Var estates take over, among pines and vines.
Light in Hyères through the year
In summer the light is hard and the water turns turquoise. Golden-hour sessions facing the islands are worth it, though you deal with the heat and the crowds. Spring is softer, the vegetation still green before the real heat. Autumn stays my favourite season on the coast: the estates empty out, the light drops and warms, the sea holds its late-season warmth. Winter brings clear air and a low raking light that suits small weddings.
